Braumeister Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Peter Hand Braumeister Tab Top

The Braumeister Beer 12 oz tab top can represents a notable chapter in Chicago brewing history, originating from the historic Peter Hand Brewing Company situated at North and Sheffield Avenues. Established in 1891 by Prussian immigrant Peter Hand, the facility stood for decades as one of the cornerstone brewing institutions of the Midwest.

During the brewery's later operational era—after selling off its flagship Meister Bräu labels and pioneering low-calorie beer formula to Miller Brewing—the company reverted to its classic Peter Hand identity. Under this revival, the brewery produced a selection of regional labels, prominently featuring the Braumeister brand. When the facility permanently ceased brewing operations in 1978, it marked the conclusion of an era as Chicago's last operating legacy macro-brewery prior to the rise of modern craft brewing.

For breweriana enthusiasts, the Braumeister tab top can is appreciated for its bold, German-inspired aesthetic and prominent Chicago identification. The face of the can features heraldic design elements, traditional crest work, and classic Germanic typography that paid homage to Peter Hand’s Old World roots. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, showcasing subtle differences in side-panel mandatory text, city address markings, and can manufacturer logos. Its connection to Chicago's final surviving historic packaging line makes it a prized piece of Illinois breweriana.
