Brown Derby Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

General Brewing Brown Derby Can

The Brown Derby Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable chapter in Pacific Northwest contract packaging and supermarket private-label history. Brewed and canned by General Brewing Company at their Vancouver, Washington facility, this can is part of a storied lineage of house-brand beers associated with the West Coast grocery market.

Background and Heritage

Brown Derby originated as a private-label brand created to supply West Coast grocery chains, most notably Safeway. In its earliest days, the brand adopted imagery inspired by the famous California restaurant chain of the same name, sparking trademark litigation that eventually led to a packaging overhaul while retaining the recognizable name. Over the decades, production shifted among several West Coast breweries, eventually being contracted to General Brewing Company in Vancouver, Washington—a facility with deep regional roots that had previously operated under names such as Star Brewery, Interstate Brewery, and Lucky Lager.

Can Design and Collector Details

The 12-ounce tab top version produced at the Vancouver plant features the classic Brown Derby branding, presenting clean commercial typography and straightforward graphic composition typical of grocery house labels from the era.

For breweriana enthusiasts, cans from the Vancouver operation are of interest due to General Brewing's role as a major hub for regional and store-label brands. Known variations exist for this label, with subtle differences found in the brewery address listings, mandatory text placements, and minor layout adjustments across different production runs. The Vancouver-designated cans provide a distinct geographic marker for collectors assembling complete regional runs of Washington state breweriana and classic supermarket house labels.
