Brown Derby Lager Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Brown Derby 16 Oz General Can

The Brown Derby Lager Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can issued by General Brewing in Los Angeles, California, represents a notable chapter in American private-label brewing history. Originally created following the repeal of Prohibition, Brown Derby was developed as a flagship house brand for West Coast supermarket chains like Safeway and MacMarr. The brand famously drew its moniker from the glamorous Hollywood restaurant chain, sparking early trademark disputes that permanently influenced the label's identity and evolution.

Production History

As retail beer sales grew and packaging transitioned through the mid-20th century, contract production of Brown Derby moved across several prominent regional producers. General Brewing Company handled brewing and packaging across its West Coast network, including its major facility in Los Angeles. This 16-ounce half-quart format was marketed through supermarket aisles as an economical, larger-volume alternative to standard 12-ounce cans.

Design and Collectibility

The can's graphics prominently display the iconic brown derby hat emblem alongside bold, traditional lettering. Side panels and mandatory text bear the General Brewing Company moniker and Los Angeles designation. For breweriana collectors, this 16-ounce tab top is a sought-after piece of California retail history. Variations exist from different packaging runs, distinguished by slight shifts in mandatory text layout, metallic trim details, and multi-city brewery listings on the side panels.
