Brown Derby Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Brown Derby Lager by Maier Brewing

The Brown Derby Lager Beer flat top can produced by the Maier Brewing Company represents a notable chapter in the history of contract-brewed supermarket brands on the West Coast. Originally introduced as a private label for grocery distribution—most famously through Safeway stores—the Brown Derby brand capitalized on the widespread cultural fame of Southern California's glamorous Brown Derby restaurant chain. This connection famously led to legal challenges early in the brand's history over the restaurant's bowler hat trademark, resulting in redesigned can graphics and trade dress.

As demand for private-label grocery store beers expanded, packaging contracts were awarded to several regional West Coast facilities. The Maier Brewing Company, located in downtown Los Angeles on Commercial Street, became a prominent producer for the line. Under the leadership of industrialist Paul Kalmanovitz, Maier developed extensive contract brewing capabilities, turning out dozens of store-branded labels alongside its proprietary brews.

For breweriana enthusiasts, the Maier-produced Brown Derby flat top can is recognized for its prominent bowler hat insignia set against clean mid-century label design. Multiple variations of this can exist across collections, reflecting slight adjustments in can manufacturer hallmarks, enamel and paint application styles, and regulatory statement layouts across different production runs.
