Brown Derby Lager Beer Pint Can

Maier Brown Derby 16 oz Lager Can

The Brown Derby Lager Beer pint can produced by the Maier Brewing Company in Los Angeles, California, represents a notable chapter in West Coast grocery-chain brewing history.

Originally established as a private label for retail networks such as Safeway, Brown Derby was brewed under contract across several regional packaging facilities. Maier Brewing Company served as one of the key Los Angeles facilities tasked with canning the brand for the regional market.

The can design prominently displays the classic bowler hat graphic and bold script lettering. While sharing a moniker reminiscent of the legendary Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant chain, the beer was an independent retail label that survived early trademark disputes, which had prompted graphic revisions during the brand's earlier history.

Among breweriana collectors, the sixteen-ounce pint format—often marked as a half quart—holds significant interest beyond the more common twelve-ounce versions. The larger can dimensions provide an expansive canvas for the iconic motif and Maier mandatory text. Known variations exist across different production runs from Maier, including minor shifts in canning company manufacturer marks, layout adjustments, and side-panel legal notices.

As Maier balanced contract brewing for major supermarkets alongside its own flagship brands like Brew 102, this pint can remains an important artifact of California's commercial brewing landscape.
