Brown Derby Pilsner Beer Quart

The Salem Brown Derby Quart

The Brown Derby Pilsner Beer Quart produced by the Salem Brewery Association (credited on the can as Salem Assn.) in Salem, Oregon, is widely recognized among breweriana enthusiasts as one of the premier prize items in West Coast can collecting.

Brown Derby originated as a private label brand primarily sold through Safeway grocery stores across the western states. Safeway contracted several regional facilities to brew and can the product, and the Salem Brewery Association was among the select operations to secure packaging rights. While standard twelve-ounce containers were produced, the thirty-two-ounce quart cone top stands apart as an extraordinary rarity within the brand's history.

Manufactured by the American Can Company, the can displays the prominent Brown Derby trade name paired with the mandatory brewery credit from Salem, Oregon. Typical of the era, the can features the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement along with statutory alcohol labeling, including "DNCMT 4% Alcohol by Weight".

Because Salem canned Brown Derby for only a brief period before brewery ownership transitions and wartime canning limitations took effect, surviving quart examples are exceptionally scarce. For collectors focusing on odd-sized cone tops or Pacific Northwest brewing history, the Salem Brown Derby quart remains an iconic centerpiece.
