Bub's Beer Cone Top Can

Peter Bub's Time-Honored Cone Top

The Bub's Beer Cone Top Can is a classic piece of Upper Midwest brewing history, packaged by the Peter Bub Brewery, Inc. in Winona, Minnesota. The brewery traces its origins back to 1856, when pioneer brewer Jacob Weisbrod established operations near the Mississippi River before relocating to the base of Winona's iconic Sugar Loaf bluff, where natural underground caves provided optimal temperatures for lagering. Bavarian-born brewmaster Peter Bub joined the operation in 1879 and later took full control of the business, establishing a regional staple that endured for generations.

The face of the can highlights two of the brewery's signature promotional taglines. Along the top band, the label proclaims "TIME HONORED FOR OVER 80 YEARS," celebrating the brewery's nineteenth-century founding. Centered beneath the bold, red-and-gold cursive brand script is the phrase "It's the Grain," a long-standing brewery motto attributed to the brand's early brewing philosophy. The bottom border carries the mandatory statement denoting the company as "PETER BUB BREWERY, INC. • WINONA, MINNESOTA."

Collectors track several label variations produced by the Winona brewery, which adjusted its packaging text to satisfy different state distribution laws and regulatory mandates. While other versions of this container featured specific alcohol percentage statements (such as 3.2% by weight restrictions) or different operational anniversary milestones, this particular issue is distinguished by having no alcohol statement printed on the face.
