Budweiser Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Budweiser Flat Top Can History

The Budweiser Lager Beer flat top can produced by Anheuser-Busch of St. Louis, Missouri, stands as one of the most iconic pieces of breweriana. Featuring the world-renowned Budweiser heraldry, the can displays the classic red, white, and blue label design centered around the trademark Anheuser-Busch "A & Eagle" insignia and the traditional Budweiser script and creed.

Industrial Packaging History

Anheuser-Busch was among the major American brewing pioneers that experimented with metal container packaging during the dawn of the canned beer era. Once canning technology was established, Anheuser-Busch partnered with prominent can manufacturers like the American Can Company and Continental Can Company to distribute their flagship lager across national markets.

Notable Variations

For breweriana collectors, the Budweiser flat top is celebrated for the diverse variations produced throughout its manufacturing run:

• Mandatory Text and Brewery Cities: Early examples feature mandatory text indicating production solely in St. Louis, Missouri. As the company expanded operations nationwide, subsequent issues incorporated multi-city listings to reflect canning at newer regional facilities.
• Instructional Panels: Several variations include specialized opening instruction panels printed directly onto the can body, complete with diagrams guiding consumers.
• Tax Markings: Earlier issues display the "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement on the seam or side panel, an element that was later phased out under updated federal packaging regulations.
• Promotional Graphics: Distinct iterations exist featuring an illustrated Budweiser bottle alongside the main label, highlighting the parallel packaging formats offered by the brewery.

Because of these manufacturing distinctions and graphic evolutions, the Budweiser Lager Beer flat top remains a foundational staple for can enthusiasts and historical packaging collections.
