Budweiser Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Budweiser Flat Top Can History

The Budweiser Lager Beer flat top can produced by Anheuser-Busch of St. Louis, Missouri, stands as a premier artifact in American breweriana. Featuring the brewery's renowned "A & Eagle" trademark, distinctive red, white, and gold lithograph label, and sweeping script typography, the can reflects the classic packaging design of the mid-20th century.

For collectors, this can presents several fascinating variations that trace the evolution of canning technology and federal labeling mandates. Early issues were manufactured with the American Can Company's "Keglined" emblem and "Patents Pending" notices. Following regulatory updates overseen by the Federal Alcohol Administration, the can's layout underwent modifications, including the addition of vertical divider lines separating the primary display face from the side panels and shifting mandatory brewery text.

Collectors also look for variations featuring the "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement on the side panel or lid, denoting specific production eras. Depending on the canning facility and the can manufacturer involved, minor differences in seam construction, gold framing accents, and legal verbiage can be found across different manufacturing runs.

Because Anheuser-Busch was one of the largest brewing operations in the United States, this flat top can serves as an essential benchmark for collecting mid-century beer containers and documenting the historical shift from draught and glass bottles to canned packaging.
