Bullfrog Beer Flat Top Can

Monarch's Bullfrog Flat Top

Bullfrog Beer was produced by the Monarch Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois. Originating in the late nineteenth century as the Josef Hladovec Brewing Company before taking the Monarch name, the brewery survived Prohibition by shifting to near-beer and soda production. Following Repeal, Monarch expanded its portfolio with budget-friendly regional offerings, establishing Bullfrog Beer as an accessible choice for Midwestern consumers.

The can design prominently showcases the distinctive Bullfrog emblem, creating one of the most recognizable animal-themed graphics from Chicago's brewing landscape. The brand was heavily promoted across Chicago with memorable outdoor marketing, most notably the catchy slogan, "Bullfrog Beer – Never Goes Flat!" Painted brick-wall advertisements featuring the slogan became familiar neighborhood fixtures across the city.

For collectors, variations exist in the bottom rim mandatory text and manufacturer markings. Some examples read simply "Monarch Brewing Company, Chicago Ill.," while other versions carry the expanded text "Brewed and Filled By Monarch Brewing Company, Chicago, Ill." These variations also correspond to differing Continental Can Company plant codes, reflecting production runs across different canning facilities. Bullfrog remains a celebrated piece of Chicago's mid-century brewing heritage and a classic example of regional graphic packaging.
