Monarch's Bullfrog Beer Flat Top

Bullfrog Beer was produced by the Monarch Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois. Monarch Brewing had deep roots in the city's brewing scene, originating in the 1890s as the Josef Hladovec Brewing Company before being renamed Monarch Brewing Company shortly thereafter. The company survived the Prohibition era by manufacturing sodas and near-beer before resuming full brewing operations and expanding its portfolio to include several budget-friendly offerings, including the Bullfrog label.

Bullfrog Beer was positioned as an accessible, popularly priced brew and became widely recognized around Chicago through eye-catching local marketing, including painted outdoor advertisements and the memorable slogan, "Bullfrog Beer – Never Goes Flat!"

For collectors of Midwestern breweriana, the can design features the prominent Bullfrog logo and Monarch branding. Variations exist in the manufacturing markings and the mandatory brewery text along the bottom rim; some examples display the straightforward text "Monarch Brewing Company, Chicago Ill.," while others read "Brewed and Filled By Monarch Brewing Company, Chicago, Ill." These variations also correspond to differing Continental Can Company plant numbers. The Bullfrog flat top remains a classic and sought-after piece representing mid-century Chicago brewing history.
