Burgermeister Pale Beer Flat Top Can

Burgermeister Pale Beer History

Produced by the San Francisco Brewing Corporation in San Francisco, California, the Burgermeister Pale Beer Flat Top Can represents one of the most recognizable mid-century beer labels from the American West. Following Prohibition, Burgermeister surged in popularity, becoming a dominant regional brand that helped San Francisco Brewing Corporation rank among the largest brewing operations in the city.

The can's graphic design is centered around its cheerful mascot, affectionately called "Burgie," shown holding a foaming glass mug alongside the slogan "A Truly Fine Pale Beer". San Francisco brewing lore attributes the original inspiration for the mascot character to Herman Lunsmann, a German brewmaster associated with the brewery during its earlier operational eras. Over time, the brewery modernized the illustration from a traditional, austere brewmaster into a friendlier, vibrant figure.

Among breweriana collectors, this can is noted for its graphic evolution and printing variations. Different variations exist across production runs, distinguished by subtle differences such as the shade of the mascot's jacket—which appears in lighter or darker blues—along with minor adjustments in side-panel mandatory text and can manufacturer stamps, including examples produced by American Can Company and Pacific Can Company.

The brewery's prominent plant on 10th Street in San Francisco served as a local industrial landmark during the brand's height, standing alongside rival regional powerhouses like Lucky Lager before industry consolidations in the 1960s transformed the operation. Today, the Burgermeister flat top remains a celebrated classic among enthusiasts of West Coast breweriana.
