Burgermeister Pale Beer Flat Top Can

Burgermeister Pale Beer History

Produced by the San Francisco Brewing Corporation at its historic brewery located on 10th Street in San Francisco, California, the Burgermeister Pale Beer flat top can represents one of the most recognized packaging designs from the mid-twentieth-century American West.

The brewery, which evolved from the pre-Prohibition Milwaukee Brewery of San Francisco, surged in regional prominence primarily on the immense market popularity of its flagship Burgermeister brand. During the post-war era, the operation expanded rapidly to become one of the largest brewing enterprises in Northern California. The brand was so central to the company's commercial identity that the corporation eventually renamed itself the Burgermeister Brewing Corporation before the facility was later purchased by Schlitz.

For breweriana collectors, the Burgermeister label design is celebrated for its distinctive character imagery and prominent typography. The can features the iconic "Burgie" brewmaster mascot holding a foaming glass, set against vivid crimson, white, and gold graphical elements. The face of the container prominently displays the long-standing promotional tagline, "A Truly Fine Pale Beer".

Over the course of production, the brewery sourced cans from major manufacturers of the era, including the American Can Company. Collectors track several distinct variations of the can, with differences found in mandatory brewery text formatting, patent line notices along the side seam, and subtle adjustments to the mascot illustration and graphic crest placement.

As a cornerstone of California's brewing legacy, the Burgermeister Pale Beer flat top remains a classic centerpiece of West Coast graphic art and industrial canning history.
