Burkhardt's Custom Beer Flat Top Can

Burkhardt's Custom Beer Can

The Burkhardt's Custom Beer Flat Top Can was produced by the Burkhardt Brewing Company in Akron, Ohio. Tracing its origins back to the nineteenth-century Wolf Ledge Brewery on Grant Street, Burkhardt grew into Akron's longest-operating brewing company. Following the death of founder Wilhelm Burkhardt, the business was guided and expanded by Margaretha Burkhardt, establishing the operation as one of the country's prominent early woman-led commercial breweries.

Manufactured by the Continental Can Company, this flat top can was part of Burkhardt's mid-century packaging lineup. The label design incorporates the brewery's "Since 1880" heritage statement alongside bold, mid-century typography. Variations exist across production runs, featuring differences in the text color of the mandatory fluid ounce declaration, factory marks, and specific state tax stamp lids, including lids stamped for distribution in Ohio and Michigan.

This container comes from the final chapter of Burkhardt's independent brewing history before operations ceased and the brand was acquired by Cincinnati's Burger Brewing Company in the mid-1950s. Today, it serves as an important artifact representing the mid-century brewing industry of northeastern Ohio.
