Busch Bavarian Beer Flat Top Can

Busch Bavarian Los Angeles Can

The Busch Bavarian Beer flat top can represents an important milestone in mid-century packaging history for Anheuser-Busch. Introduced to compete directly against regional value-priced offerings, the brand marked the brewing company's first major popular-priced label launched after Prohibition.

Alpine Graphic Design

Departing sharply from the traditional heraldic aesthetic seen on flagship Budweiser containers, the Busch Bavarian flat top established an outdoors-themed presentation. The lithography showcased snow-capped mountain peaks framed by evergreen trees and bold, stylized script, underscored by the prominent marketing slogan, "Clear and Bright as Mountain Air".

West Coast Production in Los Angeles

To support widespread distribution across the western United States, Anheuser-Busch canned this beer at its Los Angeles facility in Van Nuys, California. Cans produced for and filled at this plant featured mandatory brewery location text along the side seam denoting the Los Angeles canning operation. Major packaging fabricators of the era, including the American Can Company and Continental Can Company, supplied the lithographed steel containers.

Collector Variations

Breweriana collectors recognize several variations across production runs of this flat top. Mandatory brewery location text along the seam appeared in different formats, ranging from multi-city listings incorporating St. Louis, Newark, Los Angeles, and Tampa to specific regional designations. Additional variations include factory-stamped vanity lids featuring the brand name and subtle color shifts across the sky-blue background lithography.
