Canadian Ace Extra Pale Beer Flat Top Can

Canadian Ace Extra Pale Beer

The Canadian Ace Extra Pale Beer flat top represents a notable chapter in Chicago's mid-century brewing landscape. Packaged by the Canadian Ace Brewing Company at its historic South Side plant near 39th Street and Emerald Avenue, the label carries a heritage linked to one of the city's most colorful industrial legacies.

Before operating under the Canadian Ace name, the facility was home to the Manhattan Brewing Company, an enterprise associated during Prohibition with underworld figures including Johnny Torrio and Al Capone. In the post-Prohibition era, following regulatory scrutiny and corporate restructuring, the company officially adopted the Canadian Ace Brewing Company moniker after its popular flagship label.

During its postwar heyday, Canadian Ace ran one of the most prolific canning operations in the Midwest. In addition to packaging its own proprietary product lines, the South Side brewery was a major contract packer, producing and canning numerous private labels for distributors across the nation.

The can features classic mid-century commercial artwork, highlighted by bold typography and stylized metallic inks. Over the course of its production run, various variations were manufactured. Collectors recognize differences across production batches, including variations in metallic paint tones, side-panel arrangements, mandatory brewery statements, and tax-paid phrasing. Its connection to Chicago's storied brewing past makes it an enduring favorite among Midwestern breweriana collectors.
