Canadian Ace Premium Ale Flat Top Can

Canadian Ace Premium Ale Flat Top

The Canadian Ace Premium Ale flat top can was produced by the Canadian Ace Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois. The brewery behind this label carried one of the most colorful backgrounds in American brewing history. Originally founded as the Manhattan Brewing Company in the late nineteenth century, the operation became intertwined with Chicago's organized crime figures during Prohibition, including associations with Johnny Torrio, Louis Greenberg, and Frank Nitti.

Following Repeal, the company introduced the Canadian Ace label, which eventually drew scrutiny from federal regulators over marketing that implied the product originated in Canada rather than on Chicago's South Side. In 1947, the business officially changed its corporate identity to the Canadian Ace Brewing Company to align with its leading brand line.

The graphic design of the Canadian Ace Premium Ale can features bold mid-century branding that incorporates heraldic and aviation-themed imagery. While the brewery produced vast quantities of its standard lager, the ale variation saw narrower distribution. For collectors, known variations exist across production batches, characterized by differences in metallic or enamel finishes, varying can manufacturer stamps, and minor adjustments to mandatory legal text.

Canadian Ace remained an active packaging powerhouse and contract brewer until closing in 1968. Today, the Premium Ale flat top remains a classic and historically rich artifact of post-Prohibition Chicago industrial history.
