Canadian Ace Premium Draft Flat Top Can

Canadian Ace Premium Draft History

The Canadian Ace Premium Draft Flat Top Can represents a notable chapter in mid-century American brewing and Chicago industrial history. Brewed and packaged by the Canadian Ace Brewing Company—headquartered on South Union Avenue in Chicago, Illinois—this can was a core fixture in the brewery's post-Prohibition packaged lineup.

Brewery Origins and Chicago Lore

The facility behind Canadian Ace is widely recognized among breweriana collectors for its colorful backstory. Originally established in the late nineteenth century as the Manhattan Brewing Company, the enterprise had deep ties to high-profile figures in Chicago's organized crime history during Prohibition, including Johnny Torrio, Frank Nitti, and Lou Greenberg. After Prohibition's repeal, regulatory scrutiny and marketing disputes regarding regional naming conventions prompted the brewery to reorganize under the Canadian Ace banner.

Can Design and Slogans

The Canadian Ace Premium Draft label design reflects the bold commercial artwork of mid-century Chicago packaging. The can prominently displayed the brewery's hallmark winged spade insignia, accompanied by clean typestyles and promotional phrases such as "Pasteurized To Protect Flavor". It was crafted to be an eye-catching competitor in Midwest retail stores during a period of massive consumer growth in canned malt beverages.

Production and Label Variations

Canadian Ace operated on an expansive scale, utilizing various corporate aliases and high-volume canning contracts. Due to large production runs distributed through different regional pipelines and packaging suppliers—including the American Can Company and National Can Corporation—several variations of the can exist. These include subtle differences in text layout, paint finishes ranging from metallic to enamel bases, and varying mandatory brewery statements across different production lots.
