Cape Cod Beer Flat Top Can

Enterprise Cape Cod Beer Flat Top

The Cape Cod Beer flat top can is a prominent regional release produced by the Enterprise Brewing Company of Fall River, Massachusetts. Operating from its historical facility on Davol Street, Enterprise Brewing catered to southeastern Massachusetts and coastal markets, tailoring labels like Cape Cod Beer specifically to appeal to local seaside communities and vacationers.

Brewery History and Production

Following the repeal of Prohibition, Enterprise Brewing grew into a major independent regional brewer in southern New England. Alongside core brands like Old Tap and Boh Bohemian Lager, the brewery introduced localized specialty labels to capture specific regional trade. Manufactured by the American Can Company, this twelve-ounce steel can exemplifies mid-century commercial graphic packaging from independent East Coast brewing companies.

Collector Significance and Design

The can features coastal-themed branding created to capture the maritime spirit of Massachusetts. Mid-century New England breweriana from smaller regional operations is widely sought after, particularly because independent breweries faced mounting pressure from national brands, ultimately leading to Enterprise Brewing closing its doors in the 1960s. This limited regional distribution means surviving cans from the Fall River facility are key focal points for New England breweriana collectors.

Collector documentation notes known variations across production batches, with minor differences appearing in American Can Company plant manufacturing codes and mandatory text placements. Today, the label stands as a prime artifact representing mid-20th-century coastal Massachusetts brewing history.
