Carling's Ale Quart

Carling's Ale Quart History

Produced by the Brewing Corporation of America in Cleveland, Ohio, the Carling's Ale Quart stands as a notable large-format package in mid-century American brewing history. Following the repeal of Prohibition, former automotive executive James A. Bohannon repurposed the Peerless Motor Car Company plant on Quincy Avenue into a major brewing facility. By securing American licensing rights to the established Canadian brand, the brewery established a major production footprint in Ohio prior to the company later rebranding as the Carling Brewing Company.

The quart can features the recognizable Carling livery and classic red jockey cap insignia, drawing directly from the label's heritage. Its larger dimensions provided a substantial canvas for bold industrial graphics, distinctive brand lettering, and mandatory regulatory text.

For breweriana collectors, containers issued under the Brewing Corporation of America name are historically significant. Known variations exist across different production runs, primarily distinguished by differences in statutory alcohol content statements, Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) phrasing, and minor side-panel revisions. These subtle text changes reflect evolving state regulations and tax laws during the period the Cleveland plant operated under its original corporate designation.
