Carling's Black Label Cone Top

The Carling's Black Label Beer Cone Top Can represents an important chapter in mid-century American brewing history, originating from the Brewing Corp. of America in Cleveland, Ohio. The production plant itself holds a fascinating industrial legacy: following the repeal of Prohibition, James A. Bohannon, president of the Peerless Motor Car Company, repurposed the automaker's eight-acre assembly plant on Quincy Avenue into a full-scale brewery to produce Carling brands under license.

Manufactured by the Continental Can Company, the container showcases the recognizable heraldic shield emblem and bold "Black Label" typography. Collectors recognize several variations of this can, reflecting regulatory transitions and printing runs over its manufacturing lifespan. Notable variations include versions with the federally mandated Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement, post-IRTP releases, and subtle differences in statutory text alignment and side-panel layout.

The brand became a household name across the United States, propelled by nationwide distribution and the famous "Hey Mabel, Black Label" promotional campaign. The Cleveland plant's success with Black Label transformed the Brewing Corp. of America into one of the country's leading brewing powerhouses before the company eventually adopted the Carling Brewing Company name.
