Cascade Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Blitz-Weinhard Cascade Tab Top

This twelve-ounce crimped steel tab top can contained Cascade Beer, produced by the Blitz-Weinhard Company of Portland, Oregon. It is identified by its narrow seam construction, a manufacturing characteristic that distinguishes it from other production batches of the label. In earlier catalog classifications, this specific narrow seam variation was cataloged under entry 54-08 before receiving its own designated entry. The front face features a stylized, multi-toned blue mountain range boxed in gold above the brand insignia, framed below by hop cones and barley stalks, along with the regional marketing slogan declaring it "A Premium Beer brewed exclusively from pure Cascade mountain water."

Cascade Beer was developed to celebrate the natural geography and pristine water sources of the Pacific Northwest. Positioned as a crisp, local everyday lager, the brand leaned heavily on regional pride and outdoor imagery to appeal to Pacific Northwest drinkers during an era when local loyalty defined beer consumption.

Blitz-Weinhard traces its origins to pioneer brewer Henry Weinhard, a German immigrant who established the historic City Brewery in downtown Portland during the early 1860s. Following Henry's passing and a subsequent merger with Arnold Blitz's Portland Brewing Company in 1928, the company weathered the dry years of Prohibition by bottling soft drinks, malt syrups, and near-beer. After Repeal, Blitz-Weinhard rebounded to become an independent brewing powerhouse in the Pacific Northwest for decades, renowned for its regional advertising and deep community ties before industry consolidation led to outside ownership and the eventual closure of the original Portland facility.

For breweriana collectors, mid-century steel tab top cans from the Pacific Northwest represent a vibrant period of regional brewing independence. This can is especially sought after by collectors of Oregon brewery memorabilia and those who study the fine seaming and manufacturing differences across vintage packaging runs.
