Charro Cerveza Beer Flat Top Can

Charro Cerveza by Gulf Brewing

Gulf Brewing Company of Houston, Texas, originally established by industrialist Howard Hughes on the grounds of the Hughes Tool Company, was widely recognized for its flagship Grand Prize label. Among the brewery's regional offerings, however, is the Charro Cerveza can.

Produced to appeal to Southwestern and cross-border markets, the can's label prominently features a traditional Mexican charro (vaquero) in ornate equestrian attire and a wide-brimmed sombrero. The bold illustrative artwork stands out prominently, reflecting mid-century regional marketing and graphic design.

Manufactured with American Can Company's "Keglined" process, the container was distributed as a specialty cerveza. Among breweriana collectors, Charro Cerveza is highly sought after due to its limited regional distribution compared to Gulf's mass-market brands. Variations exist among surviving examples, showing subtle differences in mandatory brewery text and canning seam marks across production runs.

Today, Charro Cerveza stands as an iconic artifact from Houston's mid-twentieth-century brewing history.
