Chief Oshkosh Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Peoples Chief Oshkosh Tab Top

The Chief Oshkosh Beer 12 oz tab top can produced by Peoples Brewing Company represents a noteworthy chapter in Wisconsin breweriana. For decades, Chief Oshkosh served as the flagship label of the rival Oshkosh Brewing Company. When Oshkosh Brewing Company ceased operations in late 1971, Peoples Brewing Company acquired the rights to the Chief Oshkosh brand, along with other regional labels such as Rahr's and Badger Brew.

At the time Peoples took over the brand, the brewery had recently made history as one of the first major Black-owned breweries in the United States, following its purchase by Theodore Mack and an investment group in 1970. Under Mack's leadership, Peoples continued canning Chief Oshkosh to maintain the local heritage of the beloved Wisconsin nameplate.

The can prominently features the classic portrait of Chief Oshkosh alongside regional branding, with brewery text identifying Peoples Brewing Company of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, as the producer. Known production variations feature subtle differences in mandatory text layout, canning seam construction, and lid stampings.

Because Peoples produced Chief Oshkosh for only a short window before closing in 1972, cans bearing the Peoples manufacturing credit stand as significant historical artifacts of a transitional moment in American brewing history.
