Coburger Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Coburger Extra Dry Flat Top Can

The Coburger Extra Dry Beer flat top can represents a classic mid-century offering produced by the Horlacher Brewing Company of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Horlacher, one of the Lehigh Valley's most prominent regional breweries, maintained a prolific portfolio of proprietary and contract-canned labels throughout its decades of operation.

Design and Manufacturing

Coburger Extra Dry was packaged in standard 12-ounce rolled steel flat top containers. The label design utilizes a bold two-tone color scheme of royal blue and white, highlighted by metallic gold trim, European-style crests, and distinctive script typography emphasizing the "Extra Dry" designation. Many examples were manufactured by the American Can Company, often displaying the manufacturing plant code from Hillside, New Jersey.

Distributor Markings and Variations

Horlacher produced the Coburger brand both under its primary corporate name and through secondary trade entities. Variations of this can include cans bearing the standard Horlacher Brewing Co. mandatory text, as well as versions naming the Old Dutch Brewing Company, a DBA utilized by Horlacher. In addition, select production runs incorporate distribution text crediting regional distributors, such as R.S. Wood Inc. of Phillipsburg, New Jersey. Collectors can also find examples featuring state-mandated tax stamps on the lids, including the Pennsylvania Keystone stamp and Florida tax markings.
