Coburger Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Coburger Extra Dry Flat Top

The Coburger Extra Dry Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in eastern Pennsylvania's regional canning history. Marketed under the Old Dutch Brewing Company name in Allentown, Pennsylvania, this container connects directly to the historic Horlacher Brewing Company. Horlacher frequently operated under several alternate trade names—including Old Dutch Brewing Company—to package and distribute specialized regional brands.

Manufacturing and Can Design

Produced in a standard 12-ounce steel format, the can was fabricated by the American Can Company, distinguished by the maker's classic "A" logo stamped along the seam. The visual layout showcases mid-century commercial design trends, incorporating bold typography, heraldic accents, and prominent "Extra Dry" script intended to stand out on distributor and grocer shelves.

Variations and Collector Interest

Within breweriana collecting circles, this Allentown issue is known to exist with subtle variations across production runs. These minor differences are typically observed in the layout of mandatory legal text, variations in manufacturer logos, and the presence or absence of specific state alcohol content statements. As one of several labels originating from Horlacher's North Third Street plant, the Coburger flat top remains an essential regional piece for collectors focusing on Pennsylvania breweriana and mid-century canning history.
