Cold Brau Eastern Premium Beer

The Cold Brau Eastern Premium Beer can is an intriguing piece of Chicago breweriana, produced by the Schoenhofen Edelweiss Company. Originating from one of Chicago's historic brewing powerhouses in the Pilsen neighborhood—renowned for its flagship Edelweiss label and the iconic Green River soft drink—Cold Brau was marketed as a regional brand evoking traditional Old World brewing heritage.

Graphic Design and Labeling

The can showcases a classic mid-century aesthetic defined by a central shield insignia, crisp typography, and a prominent banner displaying "Cold Brau" above the "Eastern Premium Beer" designation. Period slogans such as "Mild - Mellow - Dry" complement the overall composition. The design utilizes a cool color palette, pairing blues, silvers, and whites.

Collector Notes and Variations

For collectors of Midwest breweriana, this can holds notable appeal. Known variations exist across manufacturing runs, exhibiting subtle shifts in mandatory text placement along the side panels, differing can manufacturer marks, and variations in accent coloring (such as versions printed with or without red elements). The brewery also produced cans bearing the alternate spelling "Kold Brau," making comparisons between the naming variants a popular focus for regional label specialists. As a representative piece of Schoenhofen Edelweiss history, the can stands as a celebrated artifact of Chicago's mid-century brewing landscape.
