Cold Spring Beer Flat Top Can

Cold Spring Flat Top History

Hailing from the Cold Spring Brewing Company in Cold Spring, Minnesota, the Cold Spring Beer flat top holds a notable position in upper-Midwestern breweriana. Established in the late 19th century along the Sauk River basin, the brewery leveraged its natural granite spring water supply as a core element of its identity, which heavily influenced the aesthetic and branding of its mid-century can packaging.

Packaging and Lithography

The can showcases classic mid-century graphic design, prominently featuring the Cold Spring brand name, shield iconography, and stylized grain motifs set against bright lithographed backgrounds. Manufactured through major suppliers such as the Continental Can Company, these cans frequently carry specific factory marks, including plant designation code 77 from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Collector Variations

For breweriana collectors, this flat top is particularly notable for its range of known variations. To comply with varying state regulations throughout its upper-Midwestern distribution footprint, the brewery issued cans with differing mandatory text, including variations with distinct alcohol content statements as well as versions bearing no alcohol notation at all. Furthermore, collectors track differences across canning runs that feature slight modifications to side-panel legal verbage, background metallic sheen, and seam placement.

As a centerpiece from one of Minnesota's most resilient regional brewing operations, this flat top remains a core highlight for historical breweriana collections.
