Cold Spring Golden Brew Can

Produced for the Cold Spring Brewing Company of Cold Spring, Minnesota, the Cold Spring Golden Brew Beer cone top can represents a notable chapter in Upper Midwest breweriana. Cold Spring Brewing Company, established in the late nineteenth century near natural granite spring water sources, maintained a strong regional footprint, making its canning history particularly appealing to collectors.

Design and Lithography

The can showcases a striking metallic gold backdrop accented with clean framing and bold typography that emphasizes the "Golden Brew" brand name. Manufactured with high-profile lithography characteristic of Continental Can Company's Cap-Sealed line, the layout prioritizes high visibility on store shelves. The clean graphic lines and metallic elements give the can an eye-catching aesthetic.

Text and Regulatory Variations

To accommodate diverse regional liquor regulations and alcohol control statutes across Upper Midwest distribution routes, the brewery adjusted its mandatory can markings over time. As a result, different variations of the can exist among collections. These differences primarily involve variations in mandatory alcohol content statements—such as specific notations regarding percentage by weight or volume—as well as minor shifts in text positioning around the seam and rim. Collectors actively seek out these text variations to document the distribution history of the brewery.

Packaging and Collectibility

Beyond the individual can, original multi-pack cardboard carriers manufactured for "Cap-Sealed Cans" accompanied these containers to retail shelves, serving as sought-after companion pieces for breweriana historians. Because Cold Spring maintained its regional independence while many competing regional peers were consolidated, items from this Minnesota brewer remain staples for collectors focusing on mid-century Upper Midwest brewing heritage.
