Colgate Univ. Reunion Can

Colgate University Reunion Can

The Colgate Univ. Reunion Can is a commemorative beer can created for alumni gatherings and milestone celebrations at Colgate University, located in Hamilton, New York. Produced specifically for reunion festivities, the can served as both a campus event beverage and a collectible souvenir for returning graduates.

Commemorative Purpose and Lore

Collegiate reunion cans hold a distinct place in breweriana collecting. Rather than being sold through standard retail channels, these containers were distributed privately during alumni weekends, homecoming events, and class banquets. They provided a spirited, personalized keepsake to mark alumni camaraderie and celebrate the university's traditions in the Chenango Valley.

Production and Labeling

This particular issue is notable for its lack of brewery disclosure on the label, cataloged by collectors under the designation of unlisted brewery and unknown origin. Commemorative and private-label college cans were frequently contract-brewed and packaged by regional breweries that specialized in small custom batches for private events, often omitting standard brewery identification in favor of clean collegiate graphics.

Design and Collector Appeal

The artwork showcases Colgate University branding and reunion-focused motifs, linking it directly to the rich history and spirit of the institution. Because distribution was restricted to event attendees rather than commercial stores, surviving cans have become popular crossover items sought by both collegiate memorabilia buffs and can collectors. Subtle variations exist across different reunion printings, reflecting various class celebrations and minor design adjustments over time.
