Colt 45 Malt Liquor Flat Top Can

Colt 45 Miami Flat Top Can

Introduced in the 1960s by The National Brewing Company, Colt 45 rapidly grew into one of the most prominent malt liquor labels in American brewing history. While the brand was originally conceived and launched out of National's primary operations in Baltimore, Maryland, distribution across the southeastern United States was supplied by the company's regional production facility in Miami, Florida.

Design and Branding

The can showcases the classic Colt 45 visual layout, anchored by the kicking stallion enclosed within an arched horseshoe emblem. This visual motif was developed to signify the trademark "kick" associated with the malt liquor beverage category. The bold typography and recognizable red, white, and blue color palette established a brand presence that became a staple across the American brewing landscape.

Regional Production and Variations

Cans bearing the Miami, Florida mandatory statement reflect regional canning runs from National's southern plant. Breweriana collectors focus on these regional issues due to the text differences found between single-city and multi-city plant listings. Known variations from this production era feature subtle differences in distributor text, copyright notations, and canning line markings.

Historical Significance

During this era, National Brewing Company aggressively marketed Colt 45 to establish significant market share against rival brands like Country Club. Cans produced at the Miami plant during the initial decade of the brand's existence represent an important chapter in the history of regional packaging and the rapid expansion of national malt liquor brands.
