Colt 45 Silver Deluxe Malt Liquor 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Colt 45 Silver Deluxe Can History

The Colt 45 Silver Deluxe Malt Liquor can represents a notable chapter in the history of one of America's most recognizable malt liquor labels. Originally launched in Baltimore, Maryland, Colt 45 grew into a nationwide staple under the National Brewing Company before shifting corporate hands to Carling National and subsequently joining the portfolio of the G. Heileman Brewing Company.

Design and Collector Significance

Unlike the standard white, blue, and gold design widely associated with the flagship Colt 45 label, the Silver Deluxe variant stands out with its polished metallic silver background while retaining the iconic kicking stallion and horseshoe insignia. The kicking horse emblem historically served as visual shorthand for the brew's extra kick, helping establish Colt 45 as a dominant force in American malt beverage marketing.

Among breweriana collectors, the Silver Deluxe issue is prized because it was produced as a relatively short packaging run compared to the brand's standard long-running graphics. The Baltimore mandatory on this can ties directly to Heileman's operation of the historic Baltimore facility, connecting the container to the geographic birthplace of the brand itself.

Packaging and Variations

During Heileman's stewardship of the brand, packaging was distributed across several regional facilities. Known variations exist among these cans, with differences primarily appearing in the list of brewery mandatories, canning marks, and subtle changes to the metallic background finish. The Baltimore-attributed can remains a key piece for regional collectors focusing on Maryland brewing heritage, representing the final era of production at the historic local facility before operations were consolidated.
