Colt 45 Stout Malt Liquor 12 Oz Tab Top Can

The Phoenix Colt 45 Stout Can

The Colt 45 Stout Malt Liquor 12 oz tab top can represents a notable regional release from The National Brewing Company’s production facility in Phoenix, Arizona. Originally developed in Baltimore, Maryland, the Colt 45 brand expanded across the country as National Brewing acquired and operated regional facilities, including the Phoenix plant, to supply Western markets.

Graphic Design and Branding

The can showcases the classic Colt 45 visual identity, centered on the kicking stallion set within a horseshoe emblem. Against a clean, white background, the bold typography highlights the 'Stout Malt Liquor' designation in prominent blue and red lettering. The kicking horse motif was chosen during the brand's early development to symbolize the product's extra strength and energetic character compared to conventional lagers.

Manufacturing and Regional Variations

National Brewing utilized its Phoenix location to distribute cans throughout the American Southwest. Collectors note variations across this label, particularly regarding the brewery mandatory text. Some examples list Phoenix alongside National's other brewing hubs, such as Baltimore, Detroit, and Miami, while others highlight local packaging shifts or subsequent corporate transitions displaying the Carling National Breweries moniker.

In the Phoenix territory, the brand also engaged in localized sports marketing, occasionally issuing regional promotional graphics—such as Phoenix Suns basketball schedules—directly on the cans. Because of its distinct regional brewery markings and Southwestern distribution history, the Phoenix Colt 45 Stout Malt Liquor can remains a recognized staple among malt liquor can collectors.
