Colt 45 Stout Malt Liquor 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Tacoma-Brewed Colt 45 Stout Can

Colt 45 Stout Malt Liquor represents a notable chapter in the history of one of America's most recognizable malt liquor labels. Originating with the National Brewing Company in Baltimore, Maryland, the Colt 45 brand expanded across multiple packaging facilities following major corporate consolidations, leading to regional production under Carling National Breweries at the historic Tacoma, Washington plant.

Brand Heritage and the Stout Line

First introduced in the 1960s with its recognizable rearing stallion emblem and horseshoe graphic, Colt 45 quickly became a dominant force in the malt liquor market. The "Stout Malt Liquor" label was released as a distinct brand extension alongside the flagship beverage. Tab top cans bearing the Carling National imprint reflect the operational period following the merger between Carling and National Brewing, making examples with Pacific Northwest plant designations especially notable for regional breweriana enthusiasts.

Design and Collector Significance

The can artwork showcases the traditional Colt 45 motif, centered around bold typography and the iconic kicking horse insignia. It distinctly highlights the "Stout Malt Liquor" designation across the face of the can. Collectors track variations that differ in their mandatory text layouts, city groupings alongside Tacoma, and the addition or placement of universal product bar codes.

The Tacoma facility itself held a rich industrial heritage, originally operating as the Columbia and Heidelberg brewing complex before transitioning through Carling and Carling National ownership. Tab top cans listing Carling National Breweries in Tacoma serve as physical artifacts marking the final chapter of major national brand production at the historic Washington plant before subsequent corporate acquisitions altered the brewing landscape.
