Columbia Ale Flat Top Can

Tacoma's Columbia Ale Flat Top

The Columbia Ale flat top can is a notable piece of Pacific Northwest brewing history, packaged by the Heidelberg Brewing Company in Tacoma, Washington. Originally established at the turn of the century as the Columbia Brewing Company, the historic South C Street facility grew to become one of the largest brewing operations in the western United States. While the company achieved widespread fame for its flagship Alt Heidelberg brand, it also maintained dedicated regional offerings under the Columbia name, including this distinctive ale.

The can features bold period typography alongside the Tacoma brewery's designation. Heidelberg was a pioneer in regional beverage packaging, having been the first brewing outfit in the Pacific Northwest to package beer in metal cans during the 1930s. Following the mid-century corporate transition when the company officially renamed its corporate identity to Heidelberg Brewing Company, regional product lines like Columbia Ale continued to be canned for local distribution throughout Washington, Oregon, and the wider South Sound corridor.

For collectors of Pacific Northwest breweriana, variations of this flat top can are known to exist, exhibiting subtle differences in brewery corporate text, copyright indicators, and can manufacturer mandatory markings on the side seam panels. The legacy of the can remains closely intertwined with Tacoma's rich industrial heritage, representing the mid-century peak of independent brewing in the City of Destiny prior to the eventual closure of the South C Street plant in the late 1970s.
