Columbia Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Belleville's Columbia Beer Can

The Columbia Beer 12 oz tab top can produced by Carling National Breweries represents a notable era of American breweriana and twentieth-century brewing consolidation.

Brewery Heritage and Belleville Production

The Columbia brand holds deep historic roots, originally established in the Pacific Northwest by the Columbia Brewing Company of Tacoma, Washington. Following mid-century acquisitions, the brand became part of the Carling portfolio. After the merger of Carling Brewing Company and the National Brewing Company, production of the label continued under Carling National Breweries, Inc.

The Belleville, Illinois facility—originally famous as the home of the Griesedieck Western Brewery Company—served as a crucial Midwestern packaging and distribution hub for Carling National. Cans filled at the Belleville plant carry brewery mandatories specifically identifying the Illinois facility, sometimes in multi-city plant listings that included other major operations in Maryland, Michigan, Washington, and Arizona.

Design and Collector Significance

The can's graphic layout emphasizes traditional Americana, featuring crisp typography, heraldic framing, and classic brand identifiers highlighting its pale brew heritage. For collectors, cans bearing the Carling National Breweries imprint from Belleville hold particular interest due to the relatively brief operational window of the Carling National entity before its eventual acquisition by the G. Heileman Brewing Company.

Known Variations

Can collectors have identified multiple variations of this release. Notable differences among known examples include variations in plant mandatory text listings, differences in metal construction between all-aluminum and steel-bodied cans, and the addition of modern inventory markings such as universal product barcodes on later manufacturing runs.
