Cook's 500 Ale Flat Top Can

Cook's 500 Ale Flat Top

Produced by the F. W. Cook Company of Evansville, Indiana, the Cook's 500 Ale flat top is celebrated across the breweriana community for its vivid crossover appeal between brewing history and American auto racing culture.

Design and Racing Heritage

The can showcases an eye-catching motorsport theme paying homage to the world-famous Indianapolis 500 race. Its metallic green backdrop provides high-contrast staging for an open-wheel Indy-style race car speeding across the label alongside traditional checkered flag imagery. Cook's capitalized on Hoosier state pride by dedicating this label to Indiana's legendary racing tradition, creating an aesthetic that stands out distinctly among mid-century beer can designs.

Manufacturer and Features

Manufactured by the Continental Can Company, the container was distributed in standard 12-ounce sizing. Among the notable features documented by collectors are factory vanity lids stamped with the slogan "Call for 500 Ale," adding an extra dimension of interest to surviving examples. Variations exist across the production run, including minor differences in side-panel mandatory text and graphic placements.

Collector Significance

Because of its distinct subject matter, the Cook's 500 Ale flat top holds prominent crossover appeal beyond standard breweriana circuits, drawing enthusiastic interest from automotive and sports memorabilia enthusiasts alike. As a standout artifact from F. W. Cook's long brewing history in Evansville before the plant ceased operations, it remains a centerpiece of mid-twentieth-century beverage can collecting.
