Cream Top Beer Flat Top Can

Whitewater Cream Top Flat Top

The Cream Top Beer Flat Top Can represents a notable piece of midwestern brewing history. Bearing the label of the Whitewater Brewing Company from Whitewater, Wisconsin, this can is particularly recognized among breweriana collectors for its contract brewing lineage and opening instruction design.

Production and Contract Brewing

Although the can prominently displays the Whitewater Brewing Company of Whitewater, Wisconsin as its brewer, records indicate that the beer was actually brewed and packaged under contract by the Manhattan Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois. During this era, contracting canning runs through larger facilities with established canning lines allowed smaller regional labels to bring canned beer to market without substantial capital investment in canning equipment.

Design and Known Variations

The can displays the distinctive instructional side panels that provided guidance on utilizing a canning punch. Over the course of its production run, known variations emerged that exhibit minor differences in manufacturer markings, text layout, and instructional text phrasing along the seam and side panels.

Collector Significance

Cans bearing the Whitewater imprint remain prized acquisitions within the hobby due to their limited regional footprint and their direct ties to the historic Manhattan Brewing operation. The Cream Top label serves as an essential focal point for collections centered around historic Wisconsin and Illinois breweriana.
