Croft The Champion Ale Flat Top Can

Croft The Champion Ale History

Produced by The Croft Brewing Company of Boston, Massachusetts, Croft The Champion Ale represents a notable chapter in New England brewing history. Croft's lineage traces back to the historic Highland Spring Brewery in Roxbury, which had operated since the late 19th century. Following the repeal of Prohibition, former brewmaster Walter J. Croft reorganized and modernized the facility, re-establishing the label as a prominent regional ale producer.

The label artwork features the distinguished text "Awarded Cross of Honor Antwerp Belgium," commemorating historical international brewing recognition earned by the brewery's formulations. The can was manufactured with the American Can Company "Keglined" trademark insignia displayed along the side panel.

In the 1950s, the Narragansett Brewing Company acquired Croft, setting off a transitional era for the brand before it was eventually phased into other label designations. Because of this corporate shift, known variations exist among collectors, reflecting differences in mandatory brewery location markings (transitioning from Boston, Massachusetts to Cranston, Rhode Island) and subtle updates to the text and manufacturer markings. For New England breweriana enthusiasts, cans bearing the original Boston mandatory statement hold a significant place in post-Prohibition regional canning history.
