Dawson's Ale Flat Top Can

New Bedford's Dawson's Ale

The Dawson's Ale flat top represents a hallmark era for Dawson's Brewery, Inc., operating out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Established in the late nineteenth century, Dawson's grew to become one of the most prolific packaging breweries in the entire New England region.

Following their earlier cone top releases, Dawson's shifted production to steel flat top cans to keep pace with modern canning developments and regional market demand. The can design prominently features the classic Dawson's script alongside the brewery's traditional heraldic imagery, often incorporating their well-known advertising catchphrase, "Time Out For Dawson's".

For breweriana historians and can collectors, this release offers rich study due to variations spanning its manufacturing lifetime. Different canning runs feature distinct variations in can maker logos—including examples from Continental Can Company and American Can Company—as well as adjustments to mandatory regulatory phrasing, alcohol content notices, and slight layout shifts along the seam.

Dawson's remained a major independent regional fixture until its closure in the 1970s, making the Dawson's Ale flat top an essential centerpiece for collections focused on Massachusetts brewing heritage and mid-century East Coast canning history.
