Dawson's Pale Ale Cone Top Can

Dawson's Pale Ale Cone Top

Produced by Dawson's Brewery, Inc. of New Bedford, Massachusetts, the Dawson's Pale Ale cone top can represents an iconic era in New England breweriana. Dawson's was among the most prolific packaging pioneers in the region, distributing an extensive assortment of label graphics and can formats across its product lines.

Manufactured by the Continental Can Company under their proprietary "Cap-Sealed" line, early releases of Dawson's Pale Ale showcased an intricate King of Diamonds playing card motif rendered with rich blue, red, gold, and silver details. This playing card graphic is widely celebrated among collectors for its ornate styling and bold shelf appeal.

Other iterations of the Dawson's Pale Ale label transitioned to different design treatments, including vibrant orange backgrounds, metallic gold accents, and detailed brewery crests. Variations exist across the production run, reflecting transitions between low-profile and high-profile cone top constructions, subtle changes in brewery mandatory text, and the presence of Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statements. Dawson's also distributed this pale ale label in quart-sized cone tops alongside the standard twelve-ounce format.

As a hallmark offering from southeastern Massachusetts, the Dawson's Pale Ale cone top remains one of the cornerstone artifacts of regional mid-century brewing history.
