Dawson's Premium Quality Ale Quart

Dawson's Premium Quality Ale Quart

Dawson's Brewery, Inc., based in New Bedford, Massachusetts, was one of the most prolific canning breweries in New England. Among the diverse array of packaging produced at the facility, the Dawson's Premium Quality Ale Quart represents a prominent example of large-format regional breweriana.

Packaging and Design

Manufactured in the Continental Can Company "Cap-Sealed" format, this 32-ounce container features the classic Dawson's branding that frequently incorporated the brewery's regal themes and "Fit For A King" marketing identity. The oversized layout provided ample space for bold typographic panels and heraldic design elements, designed to stand out on retail shelves alongside standard single-serving containers.

Collector Significance and Variations

Quart cans from northeastern breweries occupy a celebrated niche among breweriana enthusiasts. Dawson's produced a wide selection of brews—including Pale Ale, Master Ale, and Premium Quality Ale—in both standard sizes and 32-ounce quart formats.

Known variations of this quart can exist, showing subtle shifts in mandatory regulatory statements (such as Internal Revenue Tax Paid notices), canning codes, and minor panel text adjustments across production runs. Because quart containers were manufactured in lower quantities than standard 12-ounce cans and were typically shared and discarded at group gatherings, well-preserved examples remain sought-after pieces of Massachusetts brewing history.
