Dixie 45 Brand Beer Flat Top Can

Dixie 45 Flat Top Can Overview

The Dixie 45 Brand Beer flat top can is a prominent piece of Southern breweriana produced by the Dixie Brewing Company of New Orleans, Louisiana. Founded in 1907 by Valentine Merz on Tulane Avenue, Dixie Brewing stood for decades as an essential fixture of New Orleans culture and brewing history.

The origin of the "45" moniker is tied to Crescent City lore and the legendary Nick's Big Train Bar, located across the street from the brewery. According to local history, bar owner Nick Castrogiovanni either remarked to Merz that the brew packed a "kick like a .45" or patrons coined the phrase referencing the .45-caliber firearm kept behind the bar counter. The nickname was adopted into the brewery's official branding and featured in regional marketing campaigns and jingles.

The can design showcases bold Dixie 45 branding alongside traditional brewery text reading, "Brewed The Original Way From The Choicest Malt And Hops And Other Materials Of The Brewers Art". Known variations of the can exist among collectors, reflecting manufacturing differences from canning partners such as the American Can Company and the Continental Can Company, as well as minor text and mandatory marking shifts across different production batches. Its direct connection to mid-century New Orleans commercial history makes it a highly regarded item among regional beer can collectors.
