Dixie Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Dixie Beer New Orleans Tab Top

Produced by the Dixie Brewing Company in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Dixie Beer 12 oz tab top can is an enduring symbol of Crescent City brewing history. Founded on Tulane Avenue in 1907 by Valentine Merz, Dixie survived Prohibition and outlasted historic local rivals such as Jax, Regal, and Falstaff, eventually standing as the last remaining legacy brewery operating in New Orleans.

The can graphic features the classic Dixie script across a silver backdrop, framed with traditional red-and-white heraldry. Distributed across Louisiana and the greater Gulf Coast, these cans were ubiquitous fixtures at Mardi Gras celebrations, crawfish boils, and neighborhood watering holes.

For breweriana collectors, variations exist across different manufacturing batches. Documented differences include shifts between metallic and non-metallic silver finishes, variations in mandatory address text formatting—such as the presence or absence of postal zip codes—and different manufacturer markings on the seam and lids.

Following severe flooding from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, production at the historic Tulane Avenue facility ceased. The brand later transitioned to the Faubourg Brewing Company name, making original Dixie-labeled cans prized artifacts of Southern brewing history.
