Dixie Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Dixie Beer New Orleans Tab Top Can

Produced by the Dixie Brewing Company of New Orleans, Louisiana, this 12 oz tab top can represents one of the South's most celebrated regional brewing operations. Founded in 1907 by Valentine Merz on Tulane Avenue, Dixie Brewing survived Prohibition and decades of market consolidation to remain an emblematic staple of Crescent City culture alongside other historic local giants such as Jax and Falstaff.

The can design showcases the recognizable Dixie brand identity, characterized by its traditional script and classic southern heraldry. Because Dixie was distributed heavily across Louisiana, the Gulf Coast, and the broader Mississippi River delta, these cans were ubiquitous fixtures at Mardi Gras celebrations, crawfish boils, and neighborhood watering holes.

Throughout its manufacturing run, this can appeared in several variations. Collectors document differences across production batches, including shifts in metallic versus non-metallic backgrounds, small adjustments to mandatory packaging text, and varying manufacturing markings.

Following catastrophic flooding at the historic Tulane Avenue facility during Hurricane Katrina, production was disrupted, and the brand eventually transitioned under new ownership to the Faubourg Brewing Company name. Because of these major shifts in the brewery's timeline, Dixie-labeled cans serve as enduring artifacts of New Orleans commercial history and hold a prominent place in regional breweriana collections.
