Drewry's Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Drewrys Draft Chicago Can

The Drewry's Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable piece of midwestern brewing history issued under the Drewrys Ltd. nameplate with the Chicago, Illinois brewery mandatory. Drewrys, which originated in Canada before establishing its primary United States operations in South Bend, Indiana, expanded its regional footprint into Chicago by acquiring and operating the former Schoenhofen Edelweiss brewing facility.

Regional Significance

For collectors of midwestern breweriana, Drewrys cans bearing the Chicago mandatory hold special interest. While standard South Bend versions of the brand saw massive distribution across the region, Chicago-designated containers were produced in considerably smaller volume. Consequently, cans produced with the Chicago designation are significantly more elusive on the collector market compared to their Indiana counterparts.

Graphic Design and Labeling

The can features bold draft-style branding with prominent lettering and crisp color blocking. The design maintains the clean corporate styling typical of Drewrys during this phase of the brewery's operational history, reflecting the broader portfolio identity that Drewrys built across the Midwest.

Variations and Collector Notes

Variations exist among examples from different container manufacturers, showcasing minor differences in mandatory font placement, rim construction, and paint finishes from major can manufacturers like the National Can Corporation and Continental Can Company. The Chicago mandatory on this draft label secures its place as a desirable regional specialty for collectors focusing on Chicago brewing history.
