Drewrys Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Drewrys Extra Dry Flat Top

The Drewrys Extra Dry Beer can is an iconic mid-century Midwestern release produced by Drewry's Ltd., U.S.A., Inc. at its flagship brewery in South Bend, Indiana. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the Canadian-founded brewing company expanded its footprint into the United States by acquiring the former Muessel Brewing facility, establishing South Bend as the central hub for its regional distribution network across Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and neighboring markets.

Graphic Design and Canadian Heritage

The can prominently showcases the company’s Canadian heritage, featuring the iconic Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer ("Mountie") illustration positioned alongside a stylized Gothic letter "D". Rendered in striking red, white, and metallic tones with classic flowing script, the can presented an eye-catching appearance on store shelves. The brand frequently utilized memorable marketing slogans on its packaging, most notably "More Flavor, Less Filling, More Fun"—a phrase that predated similar national beer slogans by several decades. Drewrys also famously promoted the claim that their cans were buoyant enough to float in ice chests.

Collector Series and Variations

Among breweriana enthusiasts, this flat top is especially celebrated for its themed back-panel sets. To boost retail appeal and encourage multi-can purchases, the South Bend brewery issued cans showcasing specialized reverse-side artwork. These included a horoscope series highlighting astrological signs and personality profiles, a character-reading series based on facial features, and dynamic silhouettes illustrating various sports and outdoor activities.

Beyond the themed back panels, multiple variations exist throughout the canning runs. Collectors distinguish between cans bearing different can manufacturer marks—such as the American Can Company and National Can Corporation—as well as variations in mandatory brewery address texts, state tax markings, and specialized vanity lids with regional alcohol declarations.
