Drewrys Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Drewrys Extra Dry Flat Top

The Drewrys Extra Dry Beer flat top produced by Drewry's Ltd. in South Bend, Indiana, represents a classic piece of mid-century Midwest breweriana. Originating from the historic Elwood Avenue brewery, the brand established itself as a major regional powerhouse.

A defining visual element of Drewrys packaging is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police emblem—frequently called "the Mountie" by collectors—which paid tribute to the founder's Canadian brewing origins. Over the course of the label's history, the Mountie graphic evolved considerably, appearing with his horse, adjusted in scale, and repositioned across different production runs.

Drewrys also became well known for pioneering themed multi-can sets on store shelves. During the flat top era, the South Bend plant released several graphic series on their Extra Dry cans, including sports-themed issues with silhouette artwork of athletic figures, horoscope cans displaying astrological signs, and character-analysis cans that broke down personality traits based on facial features.

Beyond the themed series, standard label issues showcased bold metallic tones and the prominent Drewrys Gothic lettering. Multiple variations exist across these cans, differentiated by can manufacturer markings, tax stamp lids, and subtle revisions to the mandatory text and emblem placement.
