Drewrys Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Drewrys Extra Dry Can History

The Drewrys Extra Dry Beer flat top represents a prominent era in mid-century Midwestern brewing. Produced by Drewry's Ltd., U.S.A., Inc. at its flagship facility in South Bend, Indiana, the can reflects the company's regional footprint after acquiring the historic Muessel Brewing Company site.

Canadian Heritage and Mascot

Drewrys traced its lineage to Winnipeg, Canada, and intentionally highlighted this background on its packaging. The front face features the brewery's trademark Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, commonly known as the Drewrys Mountie, framed against a stylized Gothic letter "D". The label paired metallic finishes with red and green accents, frequently accompanied by the brand's marketing slogan, "More Flavor, Less Filling, More Fun".

Themed Series and Variations

Among breweriana collectors, the South Bend flat top is notable for its diverse reverse-panel designs. Drewrys engaged consumers by issuing several collectible sets across production runs. These included thematic series featuring:

• Sports Silhouettes: Action illustrations depicting outdoor recreation and popular athletics.
• Character Analysis: Panels presenting personality traits based on facial features.
• Horoscope Signs: Astrological profiles describing various zodiac symbols and traits.

In addition to panel artwork, variations exist across can manufacturing marks, including production runs by the American Can Company (identifiable by factory stamping such as an "S" for the South Bend plant) and the National Can Company, alongside differing mandatory text alignments and tax statement notices.

Collectibility

The South Bend plant drove major distribution throughout the Midwest before Drewrys merged into Associated Brewing Company. The combination of classic Mountie iconography, vibrant lithography, and interactive back-panel series ensures the Drewrys Extra Dry flat top remains an enduring centerpiece of Indiana breweriana collections.
