Drewrys Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Drewrys Orange Sports Scene Flat Top

Produced by Drewry's Ltd. in South Bend, Indiana, this flat top container represents one of the most recognizable collectible series issued by the midwestern brewery. Originally founded in Canada before expanding into the United States following Prohibition by acquiring the historic Muessel Brewing facility in South Bend, Drewrys became famous for creative packaging concepts designed to encourage retail multi-can sales.

The Sports Action Panel

Among the company's various reverse-panel sets—which included zodiac character readings and facial profile analyses—the sports action series featured athletic figures rendered in crisp white silhouettes against colored backdrops. On this orange panel variation, five different sporting pursuits are depicted:

• A football player running with the ball tucked in arm
• A baseball batter poised in a stance awaiting a pitch
• A downhill snow skier navigating a slope with ski poles
• A basketball player holding the ball in a passing position
• A water skier in a bathing suit skimming over a wake

Manufacturing and Variations

The bottom corner of the orange panel displays the American Can Company trademark alongside the "Keglined" logo and corresponding patent numbers, reflecting the patented interior lining process developed for early beer cans. Drewrys distributed these sports panels in multiple background colors and through different canning manufacturers, making the set a popular focus for breweriana collectors.
